Welcome in! First, let's take a second to acknowledge the creativity of our title, "Root Touch-Up." Liiikeee is that not clever? 😭 Because we’re on a hair site 😂😂 Anyways, take a virtual seat and hear me out for a second. We’re about to go a little deeper with this.

Although the state of our hair roots is not to be ignored, that’s not the topic of this read lol. The root(s) I’m referring to is what’s tied to your identity. The question I want you to ask yourself during this read is “What is my identity rooted in?”

And let me preface this by saying what every believer's identity should be rooted in: CHRIST.

Identify Your Identity

An identity is what determines who or what a person or thing is. Do you define yourself by the things you have? Do you know who you are outside of being a parent? Do you base your identity on your career or your hobbies? Maybe you define yourself by your relationship status or how well-known you are. Just think about that for a second because how you perceive yourself ultimately contributes to your self-worth. Who you are is not limited to your job or how much money you make. Your worth is not rooted in having a significant other or a lot of “friends”. Your talent is not what makes you valuable. The list goes on. So many of us don't know who we are outside of the labels people place on us or the roles we play in other people's lives. The points I want you to remember and become familiar with: YOU ARE WHO GOD SAYS YOU ARE. YOUR WORTH IS ROOTED IN GOD'S LOVE. YOU ARE VALUABLE BECAUSE GOD SAYS YOU ARE.

Align Your Identity

If you come to find that after some self-exploration, you are indeed basing your identity in anything outside of your connection to Christ, don't beat yourself up. But don't stay there either. Dig deeper to figure out why your identity has been rooted in whatever it is for so long. What experiences and words have shaped your thinking around this? Even after you correct this mindset, you still may have moments where you forget who you are. That's where our relationship with God comes in. When we prioritize time with God, we gain a better understanding of who He is and who He says we are. Your journey is your journey, so I won't tell you where to start, but I will tell you this… talking to God about what's on our heart cultivates relationship. Reading His word gives us insight into exactly what He says about us, how much He loves us, and what He desires for us. Worshiping God opens our eyes to how faithful He's been, is, and always will be. All of it put together is what creates intimacy with Him, allows us to trust and receive His word, teaches us to depend on Him, invites the Holy Spirit to guide us, teaches us to listen for His voice, shifts our heart posture to one of gratitude and contentment, and ultimately gives us the confidence to embrace who He is shaping us to be in His image.

Here are just a few scriptures to help keep our "roots" intact and center our understanding of ourselves on our relationship with Jesus:

  • Genesis 1:27 (Made in the image of God)

  • Ephesians 2:10 (God's masterpiece)

  • John 1:12 (Child of God)

  • Psalm 139 (God knows & God cares)

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 (New creation in Christ)

  • Galatians 2:20 (Aligning with Christ's love & sacrifice)
