Hola! It’s good to be here sharing a new message, and this particular word has so much beautiful depth to it. The topic: Parting.

Parting, you ask? lol 👀 Yes, and parting for the sake of this message = Boundaries. So let’s touch on some essential boundary-setting frameworks.

A Clean Part

(What is a boundary?)

When a client sits in my chair, one of the very first steps to creating a beautiful, lasting style is to make a clean part. A part is an intentional line of separation for a specific section of hair. It establishes order and allows you to determine which strands belong in that section and which do not. In our lives, a boundary is the exact same thing.

A boundary is a standard that defines what belongs in our space and what does not, according to the convictions and parameters we’ve been given by Holy Spirit. Because let’s be clear, everything we have in every aspect of our lives comes from Him. God has trusted us to steward our bodies, our children, our homes, our jobs, our finances, our businesses, our vehicles, our friends & families, our connections, our gifts, our time, our influence, etc. Take a moment to pause and think about every area of your life: Have you been a good steward over what God has trusted you with?🪞

Simply put, a boundary is an act of stewardship rooted in love. So how do we recognize when a boundary is needed, and how do we establish it the right way?

Choosing Part Sizes

(The purpose of boundaries, when to set them, and how)

As we’ve established, boundaries are stewardship meant to protect what God has trusted us with. For hair—to keep it healthy, thriving, and fully protected—we must first understand its unique properties. For example, the way you should care for high-porosity hair differs from that of low-porosity hair; the way you care for high-density hair differs from that of low-density hair. You have to know your hair’s specific properties to know which part sizes and protective styles help your hair thrive and which styles cause breakage.

In the same way, boundaries aren’t one-size-fits-all. You have to know yourself—and more importantly, understand God’s standards for your life—to know the people and environments that nourish you versus those that drain you.

Not only should boundaries be specific to your basic needs, but as a follower of Christ, your boundaries should also match the assignment or season God has you in. We can apply this same concept to hair parting. Your parts should be specific to what your hair needs, and correspond with the style you’ll be sporting for the next few weeks. The way a stylist parts hair for individual twists should look very different from the way a stylist parts hair for straight-back stitch braids.

What’s important to acknowledge here is this: Boundaries can shift. Your current season or assignment may require you to set boundaries you’ve never had to set before. But in this present space you’re in or preparing for, God knows exactly what you need. When the stylist sees there’s too much or too little hair in a section, the parts are adjusted. When the stylist has to pivot to a completely new style, the parts change.

Bottom line: Holy Spirit will nudge you to set boundaries when your needs change and when your assignment changes.

And just like a neat protective style requires clean parts, a beautifully structured life requires clear boundaries. So when you communicate your boundary—whether in word or action—do so intentionally. No over-explaining, no lying or misleading, and no apologies.

The intention behind a healthy boundary should never be to hurt, take revenge, or offend. Even if others sometimes don’t understand the line you’ve drawn, your intention and your heart posture (aligned with God’s truth) are what matter.

Ready for Styling

(Why boundaries are important for us as followers of Christ)

In Christ, boundaries aren’t meant to build a life of total comfort. They’re what make us available for His kingdom.

After the parting comes the styling, and styling is where vision comes to life.

God has THE blueprint and a beautiful design for your life. 🥹 He has a “style” in mind and an assignment He wants you to carry out.

Boundaries are vital because they protect the environment required for Holy Spirit to lead us and give us the capacity to say yes to His instructions. As a believer and follower of Christ, boundaries signal that your life is reserved for what God is building.

As you walk out your unique assignment, anchor your heart in these truths:

  • Galatians 1:10 NLT (No room for people pleasing in living for Christ)

  • 1 Samuel 16:7 NIV (People look at outward appearance; the Lord looks at the heart)

  • Matthew 5:37 NIV (All you need is a simple yes or no) - Supports the concept of clear communication

  • Nehemiah 6:3 MSG (I’m doing a great work; I can’t come down)

  • Proverbs 4:23 NLT (Guard your heart) - Supports the concept of protecting the environment required for Holy Spirit to lead us

  • John 11:5-6 NLT (Jesus stayed where He was despite His deep love for them)

  • Luke 5:15-16 NLT (Jesus withdrew often from the crowds that came to see Him)

  • Ephesians 2:10 NLT (God created us to do the things He planned for us long ago) - Reminder of God’s beautiful design for our lives
