D - Die to

Y - Yourself

E - Everyday

Hiiii 👋🏾 I’m so glad you’re here and it’s not by coincidence. Let’s get right into the WHAT, the WHY and the HOW of dying daily.

What It Means To DYE

Dying to yourself everyday, is a part of a much bigger picture. Let’s just say it’s a primary ingredient in the recipe for transformation. To DYE is to allow God to change your heart through surrender and submission to His guidance. It’s an intentional inhibition that creates space for humility and pushes out pride and ego. It welcomes selflessness and rejects selfish desire. It embraces forgiveness and grace while discouraging revenge and bitterness. See the pattern? It’s taking on the nature of Jesus one day at a time

Why DYE?

We as humans are born with sinful nature. We want what we want (& when we want it might I add 😅), we have an innate disposition to disobey rather than a discipline to do what is good for our wellbeing, and we prioritize ease and self-pleasure over the uncomfortable and the hard things that are sometimes required of us. But what if I told you that Jesus calls us as believers to DYE for true discipleship. In Matthew 16:24, Jesus expresses that in order to be His follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow him. So why should we DYE? Simply, because Jesus asks us to.

If you were a cashier and your boss asked you to run check out, would you look at them crazy and say “That’s not what I’m here for”? (Walmart and McDonalds employees y’all can sit this one out 😭)

A lil jokey joke 😂🤭 … but my point is that as a believer, God is our ultimate authority. Surrendering to what He is asking you to do isn’t always easy or pleasant in the moment. However, accepting salvation means you signed up for not only His rescue but also His Lordship. He is all knowing and He is always working it out for your good.

How To DYE

So how do we do this practically? When we make a decision to accept Jesus into our heart as our Lord and Savior, although the best decision we could ever make, the decision itself does not change our sinful nature. It changes our relationship with God. It entails forgiveness of sins and gives us access to the Holy Spirit. Our Helper is who empowers us to please God. He is who makes us WANT to serve others. We can learn to be lead by the Holy Spirit and create a habit to DYE the same way we cultivate relationship— talking to Him daily (yes prayer but also, do you ask God what He thinks before you make decisions?), reading His word (listening too; find someone who teaches and communicates the word in a way that sticks for you) and spending time in His presence (make time for some uninterrupted praise and worship. It may start off as just singing but let the heart connect). I mean, would you naturally sacrifice your desires (deny yourself) for someone you don’t even know? Exaaactlyyy lol. Getting to know God and how much He truly loves you will create an overwhelming love for Him on the inside of you that makes you WANT to change. Not for love (because He loves us regardless) but from love.

Here are some scriptures to help remind us to DYE:

  • Matthew 16:24-26 (Give up your own way)

  • Mark 8:34-36 (Give up your own way)

  • Luke 9:23-26 (Give up your own way)

  • Philippians 2:13 (God is working in you)

  • Philippians 4:13 (I can fulfill God’s will for my life with the help of Jesus)

  • Galatians 2:20 (Christ lives in me)

  • Romans 12:1-2 (Don’t conform, be transformed)
